Spiti Valley – The Cold Desert

Spiti valley is a stunning valley in the northernmost part of Himachal Pradesh. It is a high-altitude area with breathtaking views of the Himalayas.  This valley is surrounded by various beautiful valleys like Pin, Lingti, and Lahaul. These are the least populated and peaceful areas. It is one of the cold desert regions of India.

This valley is land between Tibet and India; therefore, it is named spiti which literally means “a middle land.” Spiti valley is glorious land along with the bliss of nature.   • Pin Valley National Park :-  This valley was declared a National park in 1987. It is an area for the protection of endangered species of flora and fauna, especially for Snow-Leopards. This park has 12 snow-leopards and many other species like Ibex, Red Fox, Bharal, Weasel, Griffon, Golden Eagle, etc. It is a beautiful park with scenic views of the valley that you can lose time without realizing.
  • Chandra Tal Lake :- It is a must to visit the location of Spiti valley. This magical lake is a part of the Chandra River. Here you can witness the real beauty of the moon in its reflection in the lake. This lake literally means Moon Lake. Chandra Tal Lake is famous for its historical value related to Mahabharata.
  • Kee Gompa :- It is the largest monastery in Lahaul Spiti district. This monastery is dedicated to the Tibetan Buddha of the Gelugpa sect. It is 4,166 meters above sea level near spiti river. This monastery is famous for the religious training of lamas for around thousands of years. It is the oldest monastery in the valley.

Road trip to Spiti valley

Road trip to the highest points of north India is the trending experience among the youth these days. Tourists mostly visit Spiti to experience the crazy road trips via motorbikes and cars. These trips have different adventure experiences than any other adventure sports. During road trips, you can easily explore the surrounding valleys and their views at different times. There are two gateways to Spiti valley Manali and Shimla. The route from Manali is 2 days route. You can stay near Chandra Tal Lake in camps or continue your trips and reach Spiti same day. Due to heavy snowfall, this route is open only for 5-7 months.

The Shimla to Spiti route takes 2 complete days to reach the destination. Tourists can stay in Kinnaur on the first day and can explore the location as it has so many things to do. And next day can restart their journey to Spiti. This route is accessible for the whole year except for a few days of heavy snowfall.

Best time to visit Spiti Valley

This valley can be explored every season as well as every month of the year. As it is beautiful and mesmerizing in every season. During summers you can enjoy its pleasant weather along with unforgettable experiences and exciting adventures in the valley. And in winter it’s extremely cold weather and breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains. This valley is the gateway to heavenly times of solitude and peace.

The best time to visit the Spiti valley is in the months from June to mid of October. This time weather is both cold as well as pleasant and less populated. During this time tourists can explore the valley along with its colorful views. The valley is partially covered with various flowers along with different species of birds that can be seen here during these times. This is the best time for photographers who wants to capture the amazing views of the valley.

Surrounding destinations

  • Ladakh :- It is in the north of Spiti valley. Ladakh is the cold desert and one of the highest points of India. It is a beautiful destination with various buddha monasteries there. This hill station is famous for its breathtaking landscape and adventure spots.
  • Lahaul :- This is a separate and smaller valley than Spiti in the Lahaul Spiti district. It is an amazing and memorable destination to explore. Tourists can visualize the beautiful glaciers, monasteries, rivers high peaks, and deep valleys here.
  • Kinnaur :- It is a district of Himachal Pradesh and a most beautiful valley. This valley is famous for its apple orchards and fields covered with wood and green grass. This valley is a Fairytale valley that is snow-clad for 6 months and lusty green for 6 months.
  • Kullu :- It is known as the land of Gods. Here you can visit many ancient temples and buddha monasteries. This valley has beautiful open fields where you can enjoy the picturesque views of the Himalayan ranges. Kullu is a hotspot for various adventure sports like trekking, rafting, paragliding, and so on.
